Daniel Buren at the Galerie Kamel Mennour

Thursday, March 12, 2015

Bit by Bit. In situ and situated works, by Daniel Buren, is on view Tuesday through Saturday, from 11am to 7pm, at the Galerie Kamel Menour 6, rue du Pont de Lodi, 75006, Paris. Until March 21, 2015.

For Daniel Buren’s fourth exhibition at the Galerie Kamel Menour, 'Bit by Bit. In situ and situated works’, the artist once again has taken his modus operandi - the 8.7cm exact stripe - and applied it to his surroundings to re-imagine dimension, shape and time.

Using the two rooms of the gallery, the artist has implemented his stripe in alternating materials of marble, granite, rock and graphite, implying a sense of permanency in the temporary display. The physical weight of the work juxtaposed heavily against the precision and finesse of the polished stone stripes offsets the dimensions of the space. Placed just so, the forms and patterns in the natural stone are matched with each other and complement the alternating pattern of the stripe.
Once proceeding to the sunken room at the back of the gallery, his stripes are presented in the form of tiles that are evenly positioned around the room, making it feel spacious and small at the same time. Alternating translucent panels in the verriere de toit have been given a fuchsia treatment giving the entire room a playful filter. The surprise is in entering the room, as this verriere is not visible from the main gallery.

In speaking about his common context, Daniel Buren says about working ‘in situ’ - “To my mind, it means that there is a purposefully accepted connection between the venue and the ‘work’ that is made, occurs, and is exhibited there. It is true of all my work, without exception, here and elsewhere since 1965”(1).
